Special Enrollment Period

When You Need to Enroll in Medicare Under Special Circumstances

Most of the time, Medicare is pretty strict about its enrollment periods. However, there are some scenarios in which Medicare grants you more leniency. If you fall under those categories, Medicare will allow you to enroll even if you’re outside of the regular enrollment periods.

There are two situations that qualify you for the Special Enrollment Period:

  • You’re moving out of your plan’s service area; or
  • You’re losing your current healthcare or prescription drug coverage.

If you fall in either of those two categories, you may qualify for the Special Enrollment Period

How Long the Special Enrollment Period Lasts

The amount of time you have to enroll in a Medicare plan changes depending on which situation you’re experiencing. If you’re moving out of your plans’ service area, you must notify your plan at least one month before you move or during the two months after you move. You can enroll in a Medicare plan during this time.

If you’re losing coverage, you have two months to enroll in a new Medicare plan after you lose coverage.
